What sport can you play when your knees hurt?

For many years, your knees have been hurting you and you no longer dare to do sports. However, there is nothing better than regular physical activity to get back in shape and take care of your joints !

You simply have to avoid just any sport: no running, skiing, athletics, rugby or even climbing! These sports are much too violent for the knees… It is better choose a sporting activity allowing them to be pampered.

Water sports: a must for your knees?

In case of knee pain, it is entirely possible to do sports. It is even recommended provided that you choose a sporting activity that gently uses the knees.By giving priority to a gentle sport, so you can stay in shape while relieving the joints that cause you pain.THE pool sports are the most suitable in your situation. Swimming, aquagym, aquabiking… They are all perfect for taking care of yourself and your knees: 

  • These are gentle sports: in the water, movements are cushioned. When you find yourself in the pool, you will be amazed at how easily you can move.
  • Water has a very pleasant massaging power: during the session, you will forget that your knees are hurting. In addition, you feel much lighter in the water and this also contributes to well-being.

What precautions should be taken when exercising with knee pain?

You often have knee pain and you are hesitating to sign up for an aquagym or aquabike class? Discover our advice: 

  1. Before going to the first session, make an appointment with your doctor. He will be able to reassure you: normally, there are no contraindications to practicing water sports when you suffer from joint pain, quite the contrary.
  2. Before the session, do not hesitate to explain to the coach that you have knee painHe will be able to give you advice, but also adapt the exercises according to your physical abilities.
  3. Take the time to warm up well before each aquabike or aquagym class. Stretching is also necessary at the end of the session.
  4. Ideally, to see a real improvement, you should do 2 to 3 swimming sessions per week. The more gently you work your joints, the more tension will be released.
