Can you lose weight while sleeping?
NO, SLEEPING 12 HOURS WILL NOT MAKE US LOSE 2 KILOS, BUT LACK OF SLEEP CAN MAKE US GAIN THEM…
According to INSEE, one in three French people complains of sleep disorders. The duration of sleep of the French has decreased by 18 minutes in 25 years for adults, and by 50 minutes for adolescents.
However, sleeping 7 hours (or less) per night would increase the risk of weight gain! In fact, people who are sleep deprived have a rate of leptin (the satiety hormone) low, while the ghrelin (the hormone that stimulates appetite) would be higher, which would consequently push them to snack. In addition, lack of sleep encourages us to move less and turn to rich foods to counteract fatigue.
Not forgetting that sleep has a direct impact on stress, and vice versa (see our article on stress!) and therefore also on hunger, which promotes weight gain.
To sleep better and have a healthier lifestyle, there are a few good habits to adopt:
· 8 to 10 hours of sleep are necessary
· Eat and sleep at fixed times
· Light dinner and at least 2 hours before bedtime: avoid red meat and prefer white meat, fish and vegetables at will
· Practice regular physical activity
